Varicose Veins Develops Higher Risk of Serious Circulatory Problems

We come across people with varicose veins quite often. We often regard it as a common condition but the truth is that people with such a condition are susceptible to various serious conditions, according to the experts. This fact calls for varicose veins treatment as soon as possible. Many people consider it as only a cosmetic problem and visit a skin doctor for the purpose. According to the study,  people with varicose veins are prone to developing deep vein thrombosis (DVTs), peripheral arterial disease (PAD ) and pulmonary embolisms (PEs).

Varicose veins are commonly seen in the age group of 40 to 80 years. While some are lucky enough to only experience a little embarrassment due to it, some may have to deal with complications like DVT, PE, and PAD.

Risk of Complications from Varicose Veins

In a study conducted recently, the researchers concluded that both men and women patients with varicose veins have a higher risk of developing DVT and PAD, with men having higher chances.

    Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are the condition in which the veins become swollen and twisted and appear at the surface of the skin. They lend a blue or dark purple colored bulge to the skin which doesn’t look very pleasant. Usually, they pose only a cosmetic problem but may lead to some health complications as discussed above.

We all know that veins perform the important function of transporting the by-products from the cells to the heart of the body. While arteries, which carry the blood from the heart to the rest of the body, have gravity working in its favor, the veins don’t enjoy this privilege. When the valves of the veins fail to trap blood in small segments in between heartbeats, the blood starts accumulating in the veins of the lower legs, ankles, and feet. Inflammation and bloating of the vein are caused when there is an accumulation of blood and it exerts pressure against the walls of the vein. Varicose veins are poor at transporting blood from the lower legs. The blood tends to clot due to this reason.  DVT is a condition in which the clots develop in veins situated deep in the body. PE is caused when these clots move into the lungs.
